Replacing the photovoltaic inverter: first the diagnosis, then the choice

The inverter is stopped, an error appears, or production has decreased: replacing it may be necessary, but that is not the first conclusion to be drawn. A check of the system allows the failure of the device to be distinguished from network, wiring, configuration, or communication problems. The correct replacement must work with what already exists.

Three points to keep in mind

01

Before changing the inverter, the cause of the problem must be identified.

02

The replacement must be compatible with existing strings, devices, and connections.

03

Final evidence and documents are part of the restoration process.

An alarm alone does not identify the defective component.

A missing data point in the app may be due to the internet connection; a power outage can be caused by network conditions; a loss of production may originate on the photovoltaic field. The diagnosis compiles a record of events, electrical measurements, production trends, and observed conditions on-site. Changing the inverter without this reconstruction risks leaving the cause unresolved.

To prepare the assistance, it is useful to have a model, serial number, year of installation, complete message, and episode schedules. Accessible photos and screenshots help without opening equipment or interfering with connections. The absence of production does not mean that every part of the system is without voltage.

Repair or replace: what to compare

The decision considers diagnosis, applicable warranty, availability of spare parts, cost of the intervention and recovery times. Age is useful information, not a universal deadline: not all inverters need to be replaced after the same number of years. The environment, ventilation and history of failures also play a role.

The economic comparison should concern complete alternatives. A less expensive replacement may require modifications to the frame or the monitoring; a repair may be reasonable if it returns documented functionality. Ask what evidence will conclude the intervention and what conditions of service will remain valid.

The same power does not mean compatibility

Two inverters with equal kW can have very different inputs. The voltages and currents of the modules, the composition of the strings, the MPPT intervals, any optimizers, and the single-phase or three-phase configuration must be verified. Protections, connection to the network, and installation conditions indicated by the manufacturer also count.

If the system uses electronic modules, the new device must be compatible with that specific architecture. Verification includes the model and generation of the devices: a common brand or an apparently identical connector does not constitute a technical confirmation.

The opportunity to add a battery?

The replacement can open up an evaluation of the accumulation, but does not oblige to install it. First, excess photovoltaic energy and consumption in the following hours are compared. A hybrid inverter must be paired with batteries specifically supported; in other cases, it is possible to study a paired accumulation on the alternating side.

Backup is also a separate function. It requires a configuration capable of separating the system from the network and powering the intended circuits with adequate power and autonomy. The word “hybrid” in the quote does not prove that these components and work are included.

Documents and procedures depend on the system

For an incentivized installation, it is necessary to check the rules of the respective mechanism. In the Conto Energia scheme, GSE distinguishes between significant and non-significant interventions: the replacement of the inverter does not always entail the same compliance requirement. A particular case concerns the component upgrades for the European component of the Fifth Conto Energia scheme.

This classification does not replace connection checks or other applicable obligations. The file must keep records, serial numbers, documentation of the intervention, and updated configuration. Asking who manages each step first avoids having to discover it when the old equipment has already been removed.

How to recognize a complete proposal

A useful offer describes the diagnosis, the exact replacement, the necessary adjustments, the installation, the tests, and the documentation updates. It also specifies what happens to the component removed and how the warranty is handled if applicable. These are more important information than a generic promise of increased performance.

After restoration, production, alarms and monitoring are checked under comparable conditions. A sunnier day alone does not demonstrate the success of the replacement: consistent measures and a system returned with readable documentation are needed.

The most frequently asked questions

There is no identical deadline for everyone. Conditions, malfunctions, repairability and compatibility are evaluated, without automatically replacing a working device.

Power is only one of the data. Tension, currents, MPPT, phases and any optimizers must be verified together.

It depends on the system’s regime and the intervention. The procedures of the Conto Energia distinguish the cases; the other applicable requirements remain to be verified.
