It's an understandable, but often mistaken, idea. A traditional grid-tied photovoltaic system, without a backup system, it switches off automatically during a blackout, even if it's sunny outside and the panels are producing energy.

This behaviour does not depend on a malfunction. It is a mandatory safety measure: the inverter must interrupt the feeding of energy to prevent current from being sent to the grid while technicians are working on the lines. In other words, without specific configuration, the photovoltaic system cannot power the house autonomously.

To obtain electricity during an outage, a system designed with a backup function is required, consisting of a compatible inverter, a storage battery, and a prepared electrical panel. Only in this way can the home isolate itself from the grid and continue to power essential appliances.

Why standard solar power isn't enough during a blackout

Most domestic systems are designed to work alongside the electricity grid. During the day, the panels produce energy, the house consumes what is available, and any surplus can be fed into the grid. When the sun isn't sufficient, the home draws energy from the grid.

This balance is interrupted when a blackout occurs. The inverter detects the absence of voltage and shuts down the system. Even though the panels might be producing, the energy is not used by the house.

It is one of the most important aspects to explain to the client: Photovoltaics and backup are not the same thing.. A photovoltaic system reduces consumption from the grid, but does not automatically guarantee electrical continuity. Backup, on the other hand, is a function specifically designed to manage temporary absence of the grid.

What does having a backup system truly mean

A backup system allows the plant to operate in isolated mode when the grid is unavailable. In practice, when a blackout occurs, the system electrically disconnects the house from the external grid and activates a line powered by the battery and, if available, by the panels' production.

This step is crucial because it prevents energy from being fed back into the public grid and makes it possible to safely power some domestic appliances. Therefore, simply having a battery isn't enough; the entire system needs to be designed to operate in an emergency.

A system with storage, but without a backup function, can store energy and increase self-consumption, but it doesn't necessarily power the house during a blackout. In most cases, a dedicated line, often called a priority or emergency line, is designed, to which only essential loads are connected.

In a home, this can mean keeping some lights on, the fridge, the modem, some strategically placed sockets, the boiler, or the electric gate. This way, even during a blackout, the home remains usable and safe.

The situation is different for high-consumption domestic appliances. Electric ovens, tumble dryers, induction hobs, air conditioning units and heat pumps can require a lot of power, especially during startup. In this case, only some utilities are connected to the emergency line.

This solution is suitable for most households as it allows them to cope with blackouts of several hours without losing essential home functions. The refrigerator continues to work, a minimum of lighting is maintained, the internet can remain active, and some sockets can be used to charge devices or power small appliances.

The advantage of a partial backup is that it requires less power than a total backup. It is a more complex and expensive solution, as it requires a suitable inverter, larger batteries and a very carefully designed electrical system.

In theory, it's possible, but it's not always practical. If an induction hob, oven, air conditioner, and other heavy loads are switched on simultaneously during a power cut, the battery can discharge quickly or the system might not be able to handle the required power.

For this reason, a total backup should only be considered when there is a real need. It can make sense in isolated homes, areas with frequent outages, or situations where some services must always remain active. It depends on the storage capacity, the power required by the connected loads and the presence or absence of photovoltaic production during the blackout.

A 10 kWh battery doesn't automatically mean 10 kWh are fully usable without limitations. You need to consider the depth of discharge, system settings, losses, and the maximum power that can be drawn. Furthermore, if the blackout occurs in the evening or at night, the battery will start from the charge level available at that moment.

In a realistic scenario, with limited consumption for the fridge, lights, modem and a few sockets, a home battery can provide several hours of autonomy and, in some cases, even cover a night. If, however, high-consumption appliances are used, the autonomy can be reduced very quickly.

During the day, photovoltaics can help recharge the battery and extend its range, but only if the system is designed to do so even in isolated mode. This aspect also needs to be checked before installation.

Can photovoltaics recharge a battery during a blackout?

Not always. Some backup systems allow panels to continue producing and recharging the battery even when the grid is absent. Others, however, only power the loads with energy already available in storage.

This difference is very important. If the system allows charging from photovoltaics during a blackout, autonomy can increase significantly during daylight hours. If, however, the battery cannot be recharged until the grid returns, the available energy is limited to that which was stored before the outage.

For this reason, during the design phase, it is necessary to clarify not only whether the system “has backup”, but how it actually works in an emergency.

Response times: does the power remain permanently active?

Another aspect to explain well concerns the switching time. This means that, during the blackout, there may be a brief perceptible interruption.

For most domestic users, this is not a problem. Lights, refrigerators, and modems can restart without particular consequences. Connecting the entire house to the battery without a selection of loads may seem more convenient, but it exposes you to the risk of overloads and too low autonomy.

With a backup line, however, you decide in advance which circuits should remain active. This makes the system more reliable and easier to manage. In the event of a blackout, there is no need to rush to switch off energy-intensive appliances or worry that a sudden load could overwhelm the inverter.

Good design always starts with the family's real habits: which appliances are essential? As seen, this isn't the case: a specific function and correct configuration are required.

Another mistake is sizing the battery by only looking at the average daily consumption of the house. During a blackout, the loads connected to the emergency line and the power required at the same time are what matter most.

There’s also the risk of wanting to power too many utilities. An effective backup must not be overloaded with non-essential appliances. The more loads you connect, the higher the system cost and the lower the autonomy.

Finally, many overlook the existing electrical system. In some homes, especially older ones, it may be necessary to upgrade the fuse box or reorganise the circuits before installing an efficient backup system.

When is it really worth installing a system with a backup?

A photovoltaic system with backup is worthwhile when a blackout is not just an inconvenience, but a real problem. It can be useful for those who live in areas prone to frequent outages, for those who work from home, for those who want to keep essential devices active, or for those who desire greater energy security.

It also makes sense when a photovoltaic system with storage is already being installed. Provisioning the backup function straight away allows for better system design and reduces subsequent interventions.

It is less worthwhile, however, if the goal is to power the entire house as if nothing were happening, with no power limits and without changing habits during the emergency. In that case, the system would need to be much larger and more expensive, and often the cost-benefit ratio is not favourable.

How does it impact the plant design

Introducing backup changes how you design a photovoltaic system. It’s not enough to just choose panels and a battery; you need to define the electrical continuity strategy.

The technician must assess consumption, identify essential utilities, check the inverter's compatibility, correctly size the battery, and prepare the electrical panel. They must also explain to the owner what to expect during a blackout, which loads they will be able to use, and which ones they will have to avoid.

This stage is crucial because many disappointments arise from unclarified expectations. A well-designed backup system works well when it is consistent with the real needs of the household.

Is it possible to add backup to an existing system?

In many cases yes, but it's not always straightforward. You need to check the type of inverter installed, its compatibility with batteries and backup systems, the available space, and how the electrical panel is configured.

If the existing system is not pre-equipped, it may be necessary to replace the inverter or add dedicated components. This makes the intervention more complex compared to a system designed from the outset with backup.

For this reason, anyone considering a new installation should immediately consider integrating an emergency function, even if they do not intend to use it immediately. Setting up the system correctly today can avoid costs and modifications later on.

Conclusion

A photovoltaic system with backup can be a very useful solution during a blackout, but only if it is designed with realistic expectations. Not all photovoltaic systems continue to function when the grid is down and not all batteries automatically guarantee an electrical supply.

The real difference lies in the setup: a suitable inverter, correctly sized storage, a backup line, and intelligent selection of essential loads. With these elements, the home can keep important services active even when disconnected from the grid, reducing inconvenience and increasing energy security.

Backup isn't for living as if a blackout didn't exist. It's for managing it better, protecting what truly matters: light, communication, food preservation, and the continuity of essential home functions.

For those considering a photovoltaic installation, the advice is simple: clarify from the outset whether you only want to reduce your electricity bill or also have protection in the event of a blackout.
